Research Interests:My research interests focus on improving outcomes of patients with pancreatobiliary diseases, and improving the safety of ERCP. Patients with chronic pancreatobiliary-type abdominal pain may be suspected to have sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD). These patients pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, and our group is currently involved in an NIH-funded multicenter clinical trial evaluating predictors and interventions in patients with SOD ("EPISOD"). They are also at increased risk of developing post-ERCP pancreatitis, and I am also interested in developing strategies to minimize the frequency and severity of this complication. Our ERCP team has been the leader in demonstrating the protective benefit of small caliber, protective pancreatic duct stents in high-risk patients, and we are currently involved in a multicenter trial examining the potential benefit of indomethacin in this patient population. I am also interested in improving the yield of tissue sampling at ERCP in patients with suspected pancreatobiliary malignancy.
