Additional Titles:Associate Professor of Cellular and Integrative Physiology
Clinical Interests:Cholestatic Liver Diseases, Colon Cancer and other GI and Hepatic Cancers, General GI and Hepatology
Research Interests:My current research interests are in cholestatic liver diseases and colon cancer. I am interested in understanding the defects in the bile secretion seen in various liver diseases including cystic fibrosis by examining aspects of pH regulation and ion transport in hepatocytes and bile duct epithelial cells. My current project involves studying the role of neuroendocrine peptides and inflammatory mediators in biliary secretion and their regulatory signal transduction pathways. My other liver research interests include study of apoptosis in bile duct cells, which appears to be an important mechanism in many pathologic processes such as in neoplasm and toxic liver injury. In addition, recently, I have been interested in GI cancers and have received VA grant to study markers for and colon diseases including colorectal cancer and the signaling pathways involved in their pathogenesis/carcinogenesis.
