Educational Goals of the Gastroenterology Fellowhip Program
Mission Statement

The goal of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at Indiana University is to train clinical gastroenterologists who successfully pursue clinical and academic excellence.

We are dedicated to training expert clinicians and physician-scientists. Graduates of our fellowship program are now members of faculties at academic medical centers throughout the United States as well as successful practicing gastroenterologists. We have also trained advanced fellows in various gastrointestinal subspecialties who have become leaders in countries around the world.

We strive to offer an experience designed to provide the best educational and technical elements necessary for trainees to become fully trained consultative gastroenterologists.

Our gastroenterology team has traditionally been one of the top-ranked in the country. We are committed to providing the most innovative treatments to our patients, improve our knowledge through research and translating research discoveries to improve patient care, and training expert clinicians and physician-scientists.

Our program offers one main track, a three-year Clinical Scholar Track. In addition, our program offers four to five-year clinical investigator track or a five-year NIH-sponsored physician scientist track to candidates who demonstrate outstanding scholarly abilities.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is fortunate to have physicians and clinical investigators with interests and expertise in all major areas of digestive diseases.

Our practice of multidisciplinary care ensures you will have access to world leaders across many specialty areas throughout your training. Indiana University Medical Center with its affiliated School of Medicine has leading-edge practice facilities, which include state-of-the-art GI endoscopy procedure rooms, inpatient and outpatient facilities, radiology, laboratory and pathology systems integrated into a comprehensive electronic health record widely accessible throughout the campus.

Our goal as a Division of the Medical School is to provide our trainees with a program that offers:
  • Comprehensive, advanced training in gastroenterology and hepatology.
  • The opportunity to acquire skills in patient diagnosis and management.
  • The opportunity to acquire skills in clinical and/or outcomes research.
  • An academic skills lecture series, including instruction on issues such as how to read and write a paper, review a talk, give a presentation, prepare a research protocol, and write a grant proposal.
  • A curriculum thoughtfully designed to balance clinical, didactic and investigative experience.
  • The opportunity to take classes in the master's-level Clinical Investigator Training Program (CITE) for individuals with outstanding scholarly talent.

More than 25 staff gastroenterologists serve as teachers and mentors. Their various backgrounds form a rich diversity of clinical expertise and research opportunities.
