The Krannert Institute of Cardiology provides a full slate of consultative services on both inpatients and outpatients at seven hospitals and five outpatient sites. Cardiology consultation can be tailored to the needs of the patient and the referring doctor. The question may be broad - "Please evaluate dyspnea and chest pain" or focused - "Please provide a second opinion on the need for reoperation in this patient with complex congenital heart disease". Consultation can be arranged with a specific focused area such as electrophysiology, or with a general clinical cardiologist.
Inpatient general consultation services are available at all of the IU Health Hospitals (Methodist, IU, IU Health West and IU Health North) as well as Select Specialty Hospital, Wishard Hospital, and the West 10th Street Veterans Administration Hospital. Call the hospital operator and ask for the Krannert Institute Cardiologist on duty.
Outpatient general consultations are available through any of our clinic offices - the main office in Medical Professional Center 2 at the Methodist campus, our offices at IU Health West and IU Health North, and the cardiology clinics at Wishard and the VA hospitals. Call 317.962.0500 for further information about referral for an outpatient consultation.
Preventative Cardiology
Several faculty members have specific interests in prevention. Dr. William Gill has special interest in the management of patients with metabolic disorders and the prevention of cardiac disease. Dr. Elizabeth von der Lohe focuses on prevention of heart disease in women.
Congenital Heart Disease in Adults
Congenital heart disease may first become evident in adulthood. Children with congenital heart disease live longer, and become adults with congenital heart disease. Krannert Institute has decades of experience in both fields. The long history of excellence in echocardiography makes the Krannert Institute well acquainted with the diagnosis and management of all types of congenital heart disease. In conjunction with Riley Hospital for Children, the state's only full service children's hospital, Dr. Irmina Gradus-Pizlo manages adults with congenital heart disease in a special clinic dedicated to meet the needs of these complex patients.
Valvular Heart Disease
Expertise in echocardiography, including transesophageal echo and 3-D echo also lends to expertise in the management of complex valve disease. Multimodality imaging is available for difficult diagnostic cases. Surgical and non-surgical approaches are available to patients. Dr. Patrick Bourdillon has extensive experience in the technique of balloon valvuloplasty. Dr. Anjan Sinha has special research interest in the percutaneous (non-surgical) treatment of valve disease.
