Clinical Interests:

COPD, Emphysema, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Sarcoidosis, Acute Lung Injury, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension

Research Interests:

Our laboratory investigates mechanisms of lung injury pertinent to cigarette smoke-induced chronic lung disease. A major focus of our research is understanding the role of lung parenchymal cell apoptosis in the development of emphysema, employing a translational approach, from basic science to animal models and human disease. Research questions currently under study include:

1. The importance of sphingolipid homeostasis in the maintenance of the alveolar-capillary structures.
2. The protective effects of alpha-1 antitrypsin on the pulmonary microvascular endothelium as it relates to prevention of emphysematous changes in the lung (Dr. Sadaf Sohrab, pulmonary fellow).
3. Paracrine effects of ceramide in the lung, including on macrophage clearance of apoptotic cells.
4. The role of CFTR in the lung endothelial cell responses to stress (Dr. Julie Noe, pediatric pulmonary fellow).

Additionally, we are actively collaborating with other investigators at IU to understand:

1. The role of ceramides in immunologic responses to cigarette smoke (Dr. Homer Twigg's laboratory).
2. The role of EMAP II in hypoxic lung diseases, such as emphysema and pulmonary hypertension (Dr. Matthias Clauss' laboratory).
3. Mechanisms of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (Dr. Tim Lahm, pulmonary fellow in Dr. Meldrum's laboratory).
