Clinical Interests:Pulmonary vascular disease, acute lung injury, sepsis, interstitial lung disease, international medicine
Research Interests:My research focuses on the effects of estrogens on the pulmonary vasculature. In collaboration with Dr. Irina Petrache, I am investigating the effectors and intracellular signaling pathways that estradiol, its metabolites and selective estrogen-receptor agonists use to modify hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and hypoxia-induced pulmonary vascular remodeling. In particular, I am interested in the effects of estrogens on hypoxia-induced endothelial cell activation (growth factor and cytokine production, HIF-1alpha activation, as well as proliferation and apoptosis markers). This research is being pursued in isolated lung endothelial cells (in collaboration with Dr. Mircea Ivan, Division of Hematology/Oncology), in rat pulmonary artery rings, and in a rodent model of chronic hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (in collaboration with Dr. Robert Presson, Dept. of Anesthesiology).Another area of active investigation are the effects of the selective endothelin receptor A agonist sitaxsentan on pulmonary artery vasoreactivity and pulmonary artery cytokine expression during experimental endotoxinemia.
