Methodist Hospital

Methodist Hospital Methodist Hospital is the largest private hospital in Indiana. The two main services at Methodist are the Krannert cardiology services including acute coronary syndrome and intensive care (CCU) beds and the Methodist medicine service. Methodist medicine is a highly successful group of private practice hospitalists who manage a large inpatient and consultant service at Methodist. Residents have an opportunity to practice as if in the private sector on this service.

Methodist Hospital is the largest private hospital in Indiana and has a hundred year tradition of innovation in medical care. As examples, Methodist Hospital was one of the first sites in the world where insulin was investigated. The nation's first lithotripter was installed here. The first open heart surgery, the first heart transplant and the first lung transplants in Indiana were performed here. For the first 9 months of 2006, Methodist Hospital ranked first among 133 academic and teaching centers in the University Health Consortium, which rates institutions according to dozens of patient care quality indicators.

There are nearly 800 beds at Methodist Hospital, of which 200 are adult medicine beds and 140 are ICU beds. Methodist Hospital delivers both primary and tertiary care and serves patients from all socioeconomic groups. General medicine ward rotations are spent with private practice hospitalists who mentor housestaff one-on-one in a thriving, collegial, multidisciplinary practice environment. The Krannert Cardiology rotations are staffed by IU faculty. The Hospitalist Medicine, ICU and subspecialty consult rotations at Methodist Hospital give our housestaff experience in providing state of the art patient care with private practice clinicians, who are also dedicated teachers, in an efficient, collegial, mentoring atmosphere of excellence. In contrast to the classic academic setting, the model of education at Methodist Hospital is preceptorial. Residents and interns follow separate patients and staff one-on-one with their attending. Housestaff autonomy is earned and freely given to those residents who demonstrate adequate skills. Resident care is "real world" and "hands on." Housestaff are considered to be valued colleagues by the staff in all specialties and are integral parts of a multidisciplinary patient care team.
