Welcome from the Chairman

David W. Crabb, M.D.

The Indiana University Internal Medicine and Medicine Pediatrics program is honored to be selected for inclusion in the Educational Innovations Project of the ACGME. It reflects the wonderful environment for training that we have in Indianapolis, our leadership in the development and deployment of electronic medical records and reminders, and dedication of our teaching faculty to leading change in medical education. It also reflects the national recognition we have for both competency-based education and our innovative approaches to instilling professionalism into the curriculum and day-to-day interactions between residents, patients, staff and faculty.

The Department has a remarkably diverse set of training and research programs, from translation of clinical knowledge into practice on a State-wide level to understanding the genetic bases of complex disorders such as neuron-degenerative problems and alcoholism. As the only medical school in Indiana, we have the State as our laboratory to advance medical care, training of medical students and residents, and in working at the forefront of developing care for the sickest and most complex patients.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Department is our 17-year partnership with the Moi University Faculty of Medicine. This began as (and continues to be) an opportunity for our students and residents to work side-by-side with Kenyan medical students in Eldoret, Kenya, and for the Kenyans to experience US-style medicine through exchange programs; it has evolved to the largest HIV/AIDS program in sub-Saharan Africa. Our program now enrolls 2000 HIV-infected patients a week at 20 sites in the Western Province of Kenya, and manages life long anti-retroviral therapy for nearly 30,000 patients. All this is tracked by an open electronic medical records system that was created by the IU-Moi informatics team. The program is a living testimony to international collaboration by academic medical centers and the power of altruism.
