Clinical Partners

IU School of Medicine trainees, students and faculty in Indianapolis benefit from strong partnerships with local area hospitals in the IU Health network, including IU Health University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, and the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition, tremendous clinical opportunities are available at Eskenazi Health, a large county teaching hospital, as well as a modern tertiary referral VA medical center.

Trainees are able to engage with learning through clinical practice at these nationally ranked teaching hospitals that record several million inpatient and outpatient visits each year. This enormous patient base provides a broad range of superb clinical educational opportunities in and near Indianapolis and allow trainees to gain experience in cutting edge diagnostics, treatments and overall patient care through clerkships and electives. A site coordinator that assists with implementation of the clinical activities is available at all sites.

Serving a Large and Diverse Patient Population

The patient population at clinical training sites in Indianapolis is large and diverse, offering medical students, residents and fellows exposure to the full spectrum of diseases–from the very common to the very rare. A large urban African-American population and a growing Latino population compose a large part of the patient volume at Eskenazi and HealthNet clinics. Referral patients from around the state include rural patients and a large Amish population. These clinical sites also serve several immigrant groups from Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.  Trainees are exposed to all types of patients from a variety of cultures, health insurance coverage levels, socioeconomic statuses and backgrounds.

Eskenazi Health

With physicians from IU School of Medicine, Eskenazi Health provides a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at its 315-bed hospital and 11 community health centers, with special emphasis on vulnerable populations of Marion County, Indiana.

IU Health Methodist Hospital

IU Health Methodist Hospital is a teaching and referral hospital that operates one of just two Level One Trauma centers in the state. A nationally recognized center for organ transplants, the hospital has a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center and highly ranked services in urology, cardiology and orthopedics.

IU Health University Hospital

IU Health University Hospital is an academic teaching and referral hospital located on the IU School of Medicine campus. The hospital is home to Indiana's only NCI-designated cancer center providing patient care at the IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

IU Health North Hospital

IU Health North Hospital is a full-service hospital providing care to adults and children in Carmel and Hamilton County north of Indianapolis, including maternity and surgical services. Pediatric care is supported by the expertise of Riley Hospital for Children and IU Health.

IU Health Saxony

Located in Fishers on the northeast side of Indianapolis, IU Health Saxony Hospital has a primary focus on surgical services for cardiovascular, orthopedic and spine and includes an intensive care unit and an emergency department.

IU Health West

IU Health West Hospital, located in Avon on the west side of Indianapolis, provides family care services including maternity, sports medicine, cardiovascular and cancer care. The hospital is designed with on-stage and off-stage corridors and elevators to keep public and visitor movement separate from patients, materials, staff and supplies.
